2009 WA State Titles

Interview on Colin
Woorree Park (Geraldton)
BMX Club President

What was the general feedback from the Super Series you held in June?

Really good feedback. We had a huge support from the council and a lot the sponsors of the day. They loved it. They were really impressed with the set up. BMXWA were very impressed with our infrastructure that we put into play. And now we’re setting up to build a State Title track for next year, which is for 2009.

What upgrades for the track have you planned for the State Titles?

That’s a secret at the moment, we’re going to keep it under wraps. Come Christmas time, people will start to see some changes. We’ve contracted a team of people who are going to come up and help us build the track. We’ve got some interesting things that are going to come out hopefully just after Christmas.

Will you be running some Pre States and if you are, do you have any advice for accomodation?

We will be running Pre States. If the people want accomodation, they can jump on the website. There’s an attachment through our visitor site where they can go on and look at accomodation in the whole midwest area. We’ll also have camping and powered sites at the track where people can stay there for the whole week.

What does it take to organise the State Titles?

Weeks and weeks and months and months of actual bringing sponsors altogether, getting the right committee together that can work together and basically pull it all together for the kids. As far as we’re all concern, we’re all in the sport for the kids. We’re not in the sport to glorify ourselves. It’s just to give the kids the best track we can and give them the best opportunity so when they come down to the city, they’re ready to race against the city boys and girls.

What type of gate system do you have?

We have a four beep starter which is the standard gate that we need. Just after Christmas, we will have the random start gate so we’ll all be up to speed as UCI standards and we will have a UCI track.

What type of training programs do you have?

At the moment, we’re in conversation with a couple of trainers to come up just after Christmas and get some programs running up there. So we’re going to be approaching BMXWA and get a list of all the state coaches. Then we’ll apply for a few grants and see if we can get them up here.

Do you have any open nights?

Just right now, I’m about to go and speak to BMXWA. We’re looking at putting on a prize money event in mid year and that’s still being discussed. We’re looking at maybe a $3000 prize pool, probably June or July next year. That’s still to be confirmed by the committee as yet. We’ve also got the Super Series, six weeks outside of the State Titles. We’ll also have a Pre States, which if there’s anything else we need to adjust, finely tune, we’ll be ready for the State Titles.

Where do you see the future of the club?

The future of the club is endless with the right support and the right committee running the club. I can see the club being one of the biggest in the midwest, or it is now the biggest in the midwest. I think we have on the books 130 members and average race nights anywhere between 50 and 70 riders. So yeah, it’s pretty cool.

Everyone have a great time down at the State Titles. Have some fun and ride hard.
